Dr. Barrie Rhodes (business development director, formulation) has a PhD in chemistry from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and over 15 years’ experience in the pharmaceutical and process industries. Barrie began his industrial career in the pharmaceutical contract manufacturing industry, where he was involved in a wide variety of activities, including operations, strategic planning, and technology development. Following a commercial role in a global analytical services provider, Barrie now leads the formulation of business development activities at CPI. This UK-based company is part of the UK Catapult network. CPI helps companies to develop, prove, prototype, and commercialise next-generation products and processes. 

Dorothee Arns, BE

European Association of Chemical Distributors 

Dorothee Arns is the General Director of the European Association of Chemical Distributors (Fecc) starting from 1 June 2019.  

Of German nationality, Dorothee Arns is seasoned public affairs with experience in leading profit and nonprofit organisations.  

Her professional career in the chemical industry started in 1995 at BASF in Ludwigshafen, Germany. In the course of the years, she held senior management positions in various areas of BASF chemicals' business, notably in marketing, sales, eBusiness, and controlling.  

From 2013 to 2019, Dorothee Arns was appointed Executive Director of Petrochemicals Europe at Cefic, and beforehand, from 2006 to 2011, she worked as Director-General of the European Solvents Industry Group. During these various years in Brussels, she has built up an extensive network of contacts within the EU Institutions and far beyond.  

Dorothee studied in Germany, Ireland, and Spain and holds Master's degrees in business administration and applied languages & linguistics. 

Francesca Fasano, IT

Francesca has sound expertise in chemistry with a Degree in Industrial Chemistry, one in Chemistry, and a PhD in Analytical Chemistry. During the PhD she worked at the US EPA in Athens (GA). Between 2008 and 2010, Francesca participated in several research projects in analytical chemistry, with scholarships at the University of Turin and the Istituto Zooprofilattico of Turin. Since January 2011, she works at Chemsafe on Agro/biocide projects. In 2015 Francesca became Head of the Agro/biocide BU.

Sophie Aviron-Violet graduated in ecotoxicology and has over 15 years of experience in regulatory affairs (Plant Protection Products and Biocides) and risk assessments. After working for Ciba-Geigy and Novartis, Sophie joined the Biocides team at Staphyt Regulatory in 2007 as an ecotoxicologist and project manager. Since 2010 she has been leading the biocides registration team. Her expertise covers Biocides regulation, registration dossiers strategy, and risk assessments for human health and environment.  

Staphyt Regulatory is a leading regulatory and development consultancy, specializing in Biocides, Plant Protection Products, and REACh. Our team consists of nearly 60 experts who can assist you with wide-ranging projects, from product development to National and European registration dossiers. We have solid expertise in preparing and submitting biocidal product dossiers under the BPR, including Biocidal Product Families, Union Authorization, and simplified procedures for a range of Product Types, notably PT01 to PT05 disinfectant products.    

Breanndán Ó Conchúir, UK

Research Staff Member for Data-Centric Cognitive Systems

Dr. Breanndán Ó Conchúir obtained a Ph.D. in theoretical physics at the University of Cambridge in 2015. This dissertation focussed on applying modern statistical mechanics to describe transport, mechanical response, and thermal properties in various soft matter systems relevant to new sustainable technologies. During this time, Breanndán published seven peer-reviewed publications in high-level journals and gave talks at six international conferences in the UK, USA, Italy, and Germany. He was awarded 12 scholarships and awards during his academic career.     

He worked as an industrial postdoctoral researcher at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg for two years. Funded by Bayer A.G., Breanndán managed two industrial projects modeling the aggregation of biomolecules in shear flows as well as the aging of weakly bound colloidal gels. He also led an academic study into the assembly of functionalized nanoparticles.   

In 2017, Breanndán took up the position of a research staff member in the chemistry group of IBM Research UK, where he leads research programs in the areas of formulation rheology and surface science. These projects explore the interface between data-driven methods and particle-based chemical simulations on HPC IBM power-based supercomputers.

Dr. Andre Chieffi works at P&G’s Newcastle Innovation Centre (UK), where he leads the global formulation strategy for powder detergents.

Before joining P&G in 2002, he studied chemistry (BSc and Ph.D.) at Universidade de São Paulo (Brazil) and University of Waterloo (Canada) and did a postdoc at MIT (US). At P&G, Andre worked most of his career at the Newcastle Innovation Centre (UK), working on the development of new technologies for sustainable cleaning products (e.g., enzymes, polymers, bleach, encapsulation, and active delivery systems).

Andre also spent two years in Brazil (2012/2013) leading P&G´s Open Innovation program for Latin America.

Ross Ellis graduated with a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Edinburgh (Scotland) in 2009. Since then, he has worked in specialty chemicals at Johnson Matthey, the U.S. Department of Energy National Laboratories, and presently at Borregaard. As a senior scientist, Ross leads innovation projects in the Borregaard Biopolymers business unit. He develops new lignin-based products for a range of applications, including detergent additives and cleaning.

He spent 14 years with Henkel and Dial, working in R&D laundry and home care, regulatory, and marketing Persil to emerging markets. Cornelius has developed and led billion Euro projects and products, and in 2018 he started Bessler Consulting. He is married with two kids.
