While improvements to sensor technology are vital to developing fully autonomous, self-driving cars and automotive electronics have been steadily increasing in quantity and sophistication,


The question is, "Which sensors are the best for autonomous vehicles? Lidar, radar, or camera?"

When Tesla is solving the LiDAR vs. radar vs. camera challenge with the eight cameras, a front radar, and ultrasonic sensors, and Waymo is focused on LiDAR, others add more radars or night-vision cameras. Even though the camera approach is cheaper, it requires a lot of processing power. From the other perspective, LiDAR can function in conditions of heavy rain, snow, wind, or fog. Still, its performance will be drastically degraded, and a large footprint, high cost, and other limitations prevent it from easy integration into the auto.

A safe and highly automated driving experience is created through an efficient combination mix of technologies:

Pierrick has authored several reports and custom analyses dedicated to general lighting, automotive lighting, LiDAR, IR LEDs, UV LEDs, and VCSELs. Prior to Yole, Pierrick worked in several companies to develop his knowledge on general lighting and automotive lighting. In the past, he has mostly worked in R&D departments for LED lighting applications. Pierrick holds a master’s degree in Electronics from ESEO in Angers, France.

Christoph Domke is a Senior Director and Clean and Smart Mobility Lead at FTI Consulting in London. 

He has more than 13 years’ experience advising companies and senior executives in the automotive, logistics, supplier, technology, energy, financial services, real estate, telecommunication, and start-up industries. He has a deep understanding of emerging technologies in the transportation industry with a passion for a cleaner, sustainable, more efficient, and interconnected movement of goods and people.

He is a road freight transportation thought leader with particular digital freight brokerage expertise, connectivity, telematics, autonomous trucks and truck platooning, electric, hydrogen, and natural gas-powered commercial vehicles. 

Before joining FTI Consulting, Christoph was a Director at KPMG and a founding member of their global Mobility 2030 team. Prior to that, he worked at Frost & Sullivan, IHS Markit, and BMW. 

In his capacity, Christoph is a regular speaker and panel moderator/participant at global conferences and contributor to business and industry press.

Farzad Parsaie has more than 25 years of experience in the area of Semiconductors and Sensor research and development. In his work, he focuses primarily on Sensor Products (like LiDAR and MEMS). He worked previously at the Institute of Microelectronics from Technical University Berlin, Philips Semiconductors AG, NXP Semiconductors AG, ams AG, and Elesta GmbH. He has been in charge of Optical Detectors, CMOS/BiCMOS Analog/Mixed-Signal and RF IC Design, Optoelectronics, MEMS interfacing, and industrial sensors from feasibility study and development to industrialization with a strong focus on sensor architecture and miniaturization through ASIC and (Co-)Packaging. As an expert in different areas, he has worked with several leading semiconductor and product companies worldwide as a customer and contributed to minimizing their development risks and cost.

Dr. Johann Riemensberger, CH

Johann Riemensberger is a postdoctoral researcher in the group of Tobias Kippenberg at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) since 2018, where he works on applications of ultra-low loss photonic integrated circuitry for ultrafast spectroscopy and 3D imaging. He holds a Diploma and Ph.D. from the Technical University of Physics, graduating on work to measure the ultimate speed limits of electronics, i.e. the transit times of electrons after photoexcitation. He currently holds a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship. He has co-authored 10 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals with more than 700 citations.

Formerly, as SVP for Kymeta Corporation, Tom pioneered satellite broadband connectivity to the vehicle. 

Tom has written and spoken extensively on the implications and opportunities for AI/ML in sensor analysis and comparison and new Low Earth Orbit satellite constellations for a vehicle, security, and passenger delight. 

Tom is a Seattle native, earning his MBA from the Executive MBA program at the University of Washington. He also holds seven AI patents in voice-based purchasing, voice user interface, cooperative conversation technologies, and satellite connectivity.
