César Vega is the Americas R&D Director for Innovation & Product Expert teams for Barry Callebaut. He has over 15 years of experience in the areas of Innovation and Innovation management in the food industry across different geographies (Mexico, India, UK, The Netherlands, and the US). 

He earned his MSc & Ph.D. in Food Science from the University of Guelph (Canada) & University College Cork (Ireland), respectively. His passion for the science of cooking drove him also to obtain a culinary degree from Le Cordon Bleu (Canada) and later to edit & co-author the book “The Kitchen as Laboratory: Reflections on the Science of Food & Cooking” (Columbia University Press, 2012).

Throughout his career, he has developed a deep technical & consumer understanding of a wide spectrum of areas including ice cream, cocoa & chocolate, nougat, pulses, and meat alternatives. He has worked for leading FMCG companies such as Procter & Gamble, Unilever, and Mars, Inc. He is an advisory board member for Ergo Biosciences SAS, a biotech start-up developing vegetable cell tissues able to express animal proteins such as myoglobin and casein.

Since June ‘19, as R&D Director at Barry Callebaut, he is responsible for the co-creation of the innovation agenda for the Americas for the deployment of technical expert support of innovation projects and the continuous development of the Regional technical talent pipeline. 

Dr. Vega has a passion for understanding how individuals assign value to food and how that shapes their choices. He has embedded a Design Thinking approach to innovation for more than eight years. He is convinced that organizations must focus on value proposition design as opposed to mere product development. 

He is also a consummated cook. He was an expert reviewer for Myhrvold’s Modernist Cuisine; he is a member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Gastronomy and Food Science (Elsevier) and Food Biophysics (Springer) and has appeared as a Food Science expert for National Geographic’s documentary series “The history of Latin Food in America.”

He lives with his wife Elizabeth, his son Lucas and daughter Josephine in the suburbs of Chicago.

Mehdi is on a mission to transform businesses through innovations, digital and disruptive thinking. After having started his career in a Swiss IT start-up, Mehdi joined the European headquarters of Procter & Gamble in 2007 and is now Global Digital Transformation Operations Director, at Coty, a leading beauty company. His passion for education led him to also be a University Lecturer on Global Innovation Management for graduate students, a public speaker and a start-up coach & trainer.

Nishtha Jain, US

Digital Product Innovation and Disruptive Technology, Senior Engineer

Nishtha Gupta brings over 9 years of global technology experience in the pharmaceutical, healthcare, and biotech IT industry. Nishtha held various roles in data analytics and business analytics and intelligence.

Nishtha is currently a Business and Technology Consultant at GlaxoSmithKline and works in R&D space on emerging digital technologies and intelligent automation initiatives such as RPA, AI/ML chatbots, and advanced analytics.

She holds an Engineering degree in Biotech along with dual master’s degrees – MS in Biotechnology from Georgetown University and MBA. She also holds a certificate in AI from MIT.

She has a strong passion for data, science, and technology. In addition to technology, Nishtha is very passionate about developing programs on gender parity and organizational leadership development and leads programming and facilitation for GSK’s Women Leadership Initiative and GSK’s Tech Inclusion and Diversity Council. She also leads programs for Healthcare Business Women Association’s (HBA) and is Global Lead for HBA at GSK.

Luisella Giani, EMEA business innovation director at Oracle, has over 15 years of interna­tional experience leading digital strategy, operations and product development. Following a degree in artificial intelligence, she started her career with iconic brands of the digital age, such as Skype, Netlog and Lycos. More recently she has been helping global businesses, such as Yellow Pages, Goodyear-Dunlop and DuPont Coating, with their digital transforma­tions. Her role at Oracle is to help companies to continuously innovate and realize new digital experiences.

Dr. Frank Möbius, DE

Dr. Frank Möbius is responsible for the technology scouting within the open innovation unit of the research division of BMW Group. In this context he coordinates the Asian technology offices of BMW Group and collaborates amongst others closely with the BMW Startup Garage and the BMW tech offices in the Silicon Valley and Singapore. In this role he is the central “Technology Matchmaker” between external innovation sources and the needs of his R&D partners and creates periodically a cross-industry, outside-in technology forecast. Before that he was responsible for series development of high-voltage batteries and the industrialisa­tion of batteries and electric engines at BMW Group for more than 10 years. Frank holds a diploma of mechanical engineering of the University of Stuttgart and received his doctorate at the University of Kaiserslautern in production automation and robotics.

Yunil Hwang, Ph.D. is Executive Vice President at CJ CheilJedang. He is the Head and Director of CJ Blossom Park which is the Research Complex of CJ group. Before he joined to CJ, he has spent a year at Seoul National University as a Professor of Industrial Relations, working in the field of Electric vehicles with battery. Dr. Hwang was also working at Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT) of Samsung Electronics and held the position which was Head of Energy Lab leading researches for advanced Li-ion Batteries. Dr. Hwang began his Samsung career in 2010 as a Vice President of Strategic Planning group. Recently, he has moved to CJ, managing the group research complex and working in the fields of Advanced Bio and Food technology for future growth. Dr. Hwang oversees the work being done to enhance not only competitiveness of current business but, new business by expanding research platform, create innovative research culture, and build global R&D infra for sustainable growth. Prior to joining Samsung Fine chemicals, Dr. Hwang was Vice President for Arthur D. Little Korea, where he worked on several consulting projects in areas of electronics, chemistry, and energy. Prior to joining Arthur D. Little, Dr. Hwang was the Director of Technology Strategy Team at LG Chem Ltd. Dr. Hwang holds a B.S. in Chemical Technology from Seoul National University in 1987 and a M.S. in Chemistry from Western Illinois University in U.S.A. in 1989. He earned his Doctor’s degree in Chemistry/Chemical Physics from Carnegie Mellon University in U.S.A. in 1996. In 2005, he also received a certificate of MOT (Management of Technology) from California Institute of Technology. He has more than 20 years’ experience working on Open Innovation and technology transfer and in the Internet business. He has been directly involved in hundreds of Open Innovation projects in a wide range of different industries and, he has worked with several International Companies in the evaluation, development and deployment of their Open Innovation programs. As part of the Catalan National program “Startup Catalonia”, he acted as a business coach for technology-based Startups helping them to develop and implement their strategy and accelerate business growth. He has been managing partner at Science2Society.eu, one of the largest EU funded projects in the field of technology transfer and Open Innovation aimed at developing new processes to enhance Industry-Academia collaboration. Jordi holds an MBA at ESADE Business School and a Corporate Finance degree at ie (Instituto de Empresa in Madrid) and has been involved in Corporate Venture and valuation projects. As innovation conference speaker he has shared his view on Open Innovation and collaborative R&D and innovation ecosystems in many international and cross-industries events in Berlin, London, Edinburgh, Boston, Paris, Singapore and Barcelona. In his current role as Global Head of Consumer IoT at Nestlè, Adrian and his team lead the design and development of the company’s IoT roadmap, bringing the latest IoT technologies to the Food & Beverage industry and consumers all over the world. Before joining Nestlé, Adrian led the design, development and manufacturing of wearables as CTO for Nestwork. Prior to this, he worked for Motorola in the UK, France and China where he developed Apps & Services strategies and was leading Motorola’s Asia Ecosystem & Partnership Management.

Alain Bindels studied at Stanford University and is a trained agile coach (design thinking, scrum) with experience in human- and patient-centric design of health care and has been working more than 10 years at Roche in different roles. He has extensive innovation management experience (setting up innovation lab, innova­tion programs, open innovation, crowdsourcing, knowledge management and innovation culture). In addition, he is leading an innovation network at Roche to support the business to innovate and run innovation workshops to solve business challenges. Alain is currently setting up an innovation and agility program to build new capabilities in the organisation to support the organisational transformation. This program focusses on agile ways of working, including rapid prototyping and co-creation with customers. In 2009, Alain joined Oriflame, and now is heading “Skin Research Institute, Open Innovation and Clinical Evaluation & Scientific Communication” Units. The team focus is to iden­tify global skin health needs, then design and develop innovative plant-based actives technologies, including consumer friendly product’s communication. With almost 25 years of expertise in Cosmetic research, about 60 scientific publications and several patents, Alain is passionate about skin aging, how to improve skin health and to enhance Beauty, by exploring the latest scientific and technology innovations and further translate them into consumers solutions.
