Professor Asker Jeukendrup is one of the world’s leading sports nutritionists and exercise physiologist who spent most of his career as a professor at the University of Birmingham (UK) (sports sciences). He was the global senior director of the Gatorade Sports Science Institute and is currently director of his own performance consulting business “Mysport­science”, and co-founder and CEO of a nutrition planning software business (fuelthecore. com) as well as a visiting professor at Loughborough University. Asker is also performance manager of nutrition for the Dutch Olympic team and head of performance nutrition for the Jumbo Visma pro cycling team. He is the teacher of the FC Barcelona advanced sports nutrition course and works with Red Bull Salzburg and PSV Eindhoven. In addition to this he has worked with Olympic and world champions, Tour de France cyclists, Champions league football teams and other elite athletes. In his academic career, Asker authored eight books and over 200 research papers and book chapters. His most recent best-selling textbook appeared in Spanish: Nutrición deportiva. Asker practices what he preaches and is competing in Ironman distance triathlons as well as other endurance events. António Pedro Mendes obtained his bachelor’s in nutritional sciences at the University of Porto and is currently pursuing a PhD in clinical and sports nutrition. He is a sports nutritionist at Futebol Clube do Porto, supporting the club’s different athletes and sports such as handball, basketball, roller hockey, swimming and football. He is also the head of nutrition of the sports and physical activity unit at Clínica do Dragão, Espregueira-Mendes Sports Centre – FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence, supporting world-class athletes from combat sports to different gymnastic categories. He is a professor of sports nutrition at the health sciences department at the Polytechnic of Leiria and a lecturer in the sports nutrition field at national and international scientific conferences.

Daniel Davey, IE

Performance Nutrition in Practice for Team Sport Success

Daniel Davey is the senior performance nutritionist for the Dublin senior football team and Leinster Rugby. Daniel also works as a performance nutritionist with a host of elite athletes in a range of sports such as golf and athletics. He is the co-founder of the popular online nutrition platform ‘FoodFlicker’, which aims to help educate people about nutrition using simple meal ideas through photo and video. Daniel received his bachelor’s in science from University College Dublin and holds a master’s in nutrition, physical activity and public health from the University of Bristol. Daniel is also a certified strength and conditioning specialist (C.S.C.S) with the NSCA and has completed the national qualification in exercise and health studies. His primary focus is developing individualised nutrition strategies for achieving specific performance-related goals. He also believes that enhancing athletes’ understanding of appropriate nutrition practices is vitally important for long-term optimum health outside of sport. In order to achieve this, he believes in providing this information in an understandable, practical and enjoyable manner. Daniel is a committed athlete himself and has played Gaelic football at intercounty level for Sligo and won an All-Ireland club football medal in 2016 with Ballyboden St. Enda’s in Dublin. His own playing and training experience allows him to understand the practical implications of applying the science of sports nutrition to achieve peak physical condition and performance in sport.

Lauren Delany, UK

Lauren Delany is a performance nutritionist for the English Institute of Sport working with British Cycling. She joined British Cycling in 2015 in the lead into the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games, where the team achieved 12 Olympic and 21 Paralympic medals. Lau­ren has also worked with Firwood Waterloo RFC, GB Badminton, British Skeleton, British Swimming and British Taekwondo. Lauren is a registered dietitian and senior practitioner who completed her BSc in human nutrition and dietetics at University of Dublin, Trinity College and MSc in sport and exercise nutrition at Loughborough University. Lauren is also a keen sports person having represented Ireland in basketball underage and is a current member of the Irish Women’s Rugby XV team.

As the performance nutritionist for Arsenal Football Club, Richard Allison's role is to enhance player health, performance and recovery through nutrition and training. Richard has previously worked in a sports medicine setting as well as for many teams and individual elite athletes. He is an expert in nutrition for injured athletes, and in his PhD thesis he studied the impact of vitamin D on athlete health and performance.

Leron Sarig, US

Leron Sarig is the director of performance nutrition for the San Francisco Giants. She previously consulted for the Giants with their minor league system in 2018 before taking a full-time position with the organisation at the start of the 2019 season. Prior to her posi­tion with the Giants, she spent five and a half years as a performance dietitian at EXOS, where she worked primarily with military special operations and assisted with preparing NFL prospects for the NFL combine. Leron has also consulted for the Arizona Coyotes, an NHL team, and assisted with nutrition integration for the Argentinian National Rugby Team during their preseason training camps in the United States. She also teaches online introductory nutrition courses on a part-time basis for Pensacola State College. Leron obtained her sports nutrition master’s degree from Florida State University and currently resides in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Dan Martin is a post-doctoral researcher at Liverpool John Moores University, where his research focusses on nutrition and behaviour change within professional horseracing. His research in this area was awarded with the Sr. Professor Clyde Williams OBE Award for Research and Innovation in Sport and Exercise Nutrition. In his applied roles, Dan is a senior performance nutritionist for the Professional Jockeys Association and the Injured Jockeys Fund, consulting to both organisations since 2013 and working alongside some of the UK’s leading jockeys in their bid to make light racing weights. In 2018 he expanded his scope within horse sports and is now working for Team GB Equestrian in their preparations for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Away from equine sports he consults for a championship football club.

Mark Germaine is a senior performance nutritionist who obtained a bachelor’s with hon­ours in sport science and health. He also gained a distinction in his master’s of sports nutrition for his thesis on the effects of ZMA on sleep and performance, where he also won the Prof. Don MacLaren Award. Mark currently works with a number of elite level combat sport athletes, in addition to working as a researcher at the School of Health and Human Performance at Dublin City University (DCU). Mark’s main research interests revolve around combat sport, and he co-authored research in combat sport from his time at Liverpool John Moores University, in addition to currently undertaking research at DCU. He is also the co-chair for the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) combat sport special interest group.

Josette van Toor is a performance nutritionist for about eight years in the Netherlands and has worked with both national and international elite athletes. She has an IOC diploma in sports nutrition and is one of the performance nutritionists within the TeamNL Olympic organisation for a couple of years now. Here she works closely with the Dutch female vol­leyball team, female elite gymnasts, curling team, short track speedskating team and with the Paralympic boccia team. Also, she currently works with several talent teams. Besides her work for TeamNL she also has her own practice since 2011, where she provides nutri­tion support to athletes of all levels in various sports.

Laura Martinelli is a registered sports dietitian, graduated with honours in dietetics, con­firmed by the department of medicine of Padua University, and then majored in sports nutrition in England, achieving a MSc in sport and exercise nutrition at Leeds Metropolitan University (now Leeds Beckett University), in 2010. Since 2010 she has been working with athletes from different sports fields to prepare national and international level races. Since 2013, Laura has been a lecturer in sports nutrition and physiology at School of Sports Nu­trition and Supplements (located in Padua). From 2014-16, she was team sports dietitian for the Swiss World Tour IAM cycling team. Since October 2017, she’s been the head of nutrition of the Bahrain Merida Cycling Team. And since February 2019, Laura’s been the personal sports dietitian of the tennis player Borna Coric.

Rodrigo Abreu, who is currently a PhD candidate, has a degree in nutrition and has more than 15 years of experience in sports nutrition, namely in football. He has been part of the Sports Medicine and Traumatology Centre of CUF Alvalade since 2004 and since 2015 he's been the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) nutritionist, being responsible for the nutritional support to all 23 national teams and professional referees. Throughout these years, he has closely supported several elite athletes in a variety of sports including modern pentathlon, weightlifting and MMA. He's also an associate professor at ISCSEM (Institute of Health Sciences) and a speaker at several seminars about sports nutrition.

Natalia Nasarre, ES

Natalia is a graduate in human nutrition and dietetics from the University of Zaragoza (UNIZAR). She has a master’s degree in human nutrition from the University of Granada (UGR). She also has a university extension course in food and nutrition in childhood from the University of Barcelona. Natalia is currently pursuing a degree in psychology (UNED). She has a Certification in Nutritional Coaching® Level 1 and Level 2 by Nutrition Coaching®. She has done a university extension course in improvement in sports nutrition from the University of Barcelona. Natalia also earned an international certification in ISAK Level 1 Cineanthropometry from the University of País Vasco. Natalia’s experience as a nutritionist and dietitian is varied as she has had various experiences in different fields of nutrition: food industry, the clinical field, and in research. Sports nutrition is one of her specialties currently developed at Sánchez-Casal Academy where she is an official RDN who consults with all athletes about nutritional advice.

Tom Clifford holds a BSc (Hons) in Sports and Exercise Science, an MSc in Sports Performance, and a PhD in Exercise and Health Nutrition. He is a Lecturer in Physiology and Nutrition a Loughborough University, where he researches the influence of nutrition and dietary com­ponents on health and exercise performance, with a particular focus on exercise recovery. Tom is also a British Association of Sports and Exercise Sciences Accredited Practitioner and Registered Sports and Exercise Nutritionist who has consulted for elite Rugby, rowing and soccer teams.

Dr. Holwerda works as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow within the Department of Human Biology at Maastricht University. Dr. Holwerda holds a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Exercise Physiology and has recently completed a Ph.D. focusing on nutrition and physical activity interventions to counteract age-associated skeletal muscle and strength loss. His current research focuses on identifying the properties of dietary protein that can be modulated to further enhance anabolic effects on skeletal muscle tissue.
